Chapter 9 - THE UNDERGROUND RESIDENTThe hidden apartment belonged to no employee.

Its electricity bypassed hospital billing. Food entered through a private service elevator. The occupant used legacy credentials tied to Isabella’s tablet.

Security found no one.

A narrow tunnel connected the apartment to the old fertility vault beneath the neighboring research building.

Rain flooded part of the passage, erasing footprints.

Dana recovered hair from the pillow and sent it for DNA testing.

Vittorio stood before the wall of photographs.

Evelyn at age six, holding a violin.

Evelyn at twelve, leaving school.

Evelyn at twenty-one, graduating from Stanford.

Evelyn beside Grant on their wedding day.

Evelyn entering the hospital that morning.

Someone had followed her for decades.

One image had been taken from inside Vittorio’s own estate.

He recognized the angle from a locked guest room no one had used since Isabella died.

“Bianca may have been closer than we knew,” Nathan said.

“Or someone wants us to believe that.”

Grant requested a private conversation with Vittorio.

Vittorio refused until Evelyn used the communication tablet.

LET HIM TALK. RECORDED.

Grant was brought into the delivery suite under guard. He remained several feet from the bed.

“You think I created this,” he said. “I didn’t.”

“You forged the trust,” Nathan replied.

“Yes.”

“You arranged Evelyn’s paralysis.”

“No.”

“You paid Vale.”

“I paid him to perform the embryo transfer.”

“You believed B-19 belonged to Matthew and Bianca?”

“I believed it belonged to Matthew and Isabella.”

Vittorio’s expression changed.

Grant explained that his brother kept private letters describing a relationship with Isabella shortly before his death. Matthew believed she wanted another child but could not risk public scandal.

Grant found a reference to embryo B-19.

He assumed Isabella was the genetic mother.

A child from Isabella and Matthew would be Evelyn’s maternal half-sibling and Grant’s niece.

Grant intended to use that biological link to remain inside the DeLuca trust even after divorcing Evelyn.

“Why involve Celeste?” Dana asked.

“She had access to the fertility program and wanted a child. I needed her to believe the transfer was hers.”

Celeste shouted from the adjacent room.

Grant ignored her.

“Why paralyze Evelyn?” Vittorio asked.

“I needed temporary incapacity. I instructed Vale to keep her sedated.”

“Conscious paralysis is not sedation.”

“I did not order that drug.”

Grant’s distinction might be self-serving, but Dana’s logs supported part of it. The neuromuscular infusion was added after Grant left the underground terminal.

The legacy account V.V. authorized it.

The unknown resident had escalated the plan.

“Why?” Nathan asked.

Grant looked toward the neonatal room.

“Maybe she needed Evelyn conscious.”

“To witness the theft?”

“To activate the contacts.”

The room fell silent.

Someone who knew Evelyn’s security technology may have deliberately forced her to use it.

The paralysis, humiliation, forged documents, and stolen baby created an event impossible to ignore.

A trap designed to expose Grant, Vale, and the hospital.

But Evelyn and the newborn had been placed in real danger.

The hidden protector had treated them as instruments.

Vittorio’s expression hardened.

“No one who protects my daughter by paralyzing her is her ally.”

The hair sample from the underground apartment returned.

It belonged to a woman closely related to Evelyn and the newborn.

The profile strongly supported Bianca Voss.

Bianca was alive.

Then Dana found a live camera feed on Isabella’s tablet.

A woman stood inside the fertility vault holding a cryogenic container.

Her face remained in shadow.

She spoke directly into the camera.

“Vittorio, Grant used the wrong embryo.”

The feed ended.

👉 Bianca appeared alive beneath the hospital—and claimed the newborn had not come from B-19 at all.
