Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN IN THE GLASS ROOMEva did not threaten the baby.

She held her securely, supported the head, and watched the security officers gather outside the neonatal room.
Dana spoke through the intercom.
“Place the child in the bassinet and step away.”
“No.”
“You are surrounded.”
“I have been surrounded since I was born.”
Vittorio approached the glass.
“Tell me who you are.”
“You saw me when I was fourteen.”
“I was told you were Bianca’s daughter.”
“I was told Evelyn stole my father.”
Evelyn pushed herself upright with Nora’s help. Every movement tore through the surgical incision, but she refused to remain flat while another woman claimed her life.
Eva looked toward her.
“You received the name. The home. The father. The company.”
“I didn’t know you existed,” Evelyn said, her voice barely more than air.
“That was the design.”
Eva claimed Bianca gave birth to twins.
One child was biologically Vittorio’s.
The other was biologically Matthew Mercer’s.
Isabella had suffered repeated pregnancy losses and secretly arranged to raise one of Bianca’s daughters as her own.
Vale’s institute split the identities.
Vittorio received Evelyn.
Bianca retained Eva temporarily.
Later, Isabella discovered both girls had been used in fertility experiments and tried to protect them through false records.
“Which one of us is Vittorio’s daughter?” Evelyn asked.
Eva’s eyes moved toward the newborn.
“That depends on which archive you believe.”
She had spent her life moving between hidden residences, psychiatric clinics, and substitute identities. Whenever she attempted to contact Vittorio, Lydia or Isabella’s trustees redirected her.
Bianca taught Eva that Evelyn’s public life existed because Eva remained hidden.
Resentment became the only inheritance she understood.
“Did you paralyze me?” Evelyn asked.
Eva did not answer immediately.
“I activated the recording pathway.”
“That was not the question.”
“I changed the infusion.”
Vittorio’s face became murderous.
“You could have killed her.”
“I calculated the dose.”
Nora shouted through the intercom.
“You do not calculate safely with another person’s respiratory system.”
Eva’s composure cracked.
“I needed her conscious. If she remained asleep, Grant would take the child and the trust would close again.”
“You used me,” Evelyn said.
Eva’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
The admission did not excuse her.
It made the betrayal clearer.
Eva insisted she substituted E-4 for Grant’s requested embryo because B-19 had been created through coercion. E-4, she claimed, contained her own genetic material and a donor chosen by Bianca.
She wanted the child born into the DeLuca family publicly so the hidden identity network would be forced open.
“You placed your embryo inside me without consent,” Evelyn said.
“Yes.”
“You are not different from Grant.”
Eva flinched.
“He wanted money.”
“You wanted truth. My body still paid.”
For the first time, Eva lowered her gaze.
Dana continued negotiating.
“Place the baby down. You can preserve every claim without holding her.”
Eva examined the bracelet.
Beneath E-4, another label began appearing as body heat activated the adhesive.
The newborn’s ankle monitor transmitted a fresh code to the encrypted tablet.
MATERNAL SOURCE VERIFIED.
Everyone waited.
The name remained concealed behind an authorization lock.
Eva’s face changed.
“That cannot be right.”
“What does it say?” Vittorio demanded.
“It requires Isabella’s living biometric confirmation.”
“Isabella is dead.”
Eva looked toward the private elevator.
“No. She isn’t.”
The elevator display illuminated.
A car began rising from the underground level.
Vittorio stared at the numbers.
“No one is below.”
Dana checked the surveillance feed.
A woman stood inside the elevator wearing a dark veil and holding the original fertility ledger.
The facial-recognition system identified her as:
ISABELLA DELUCA—ACCESS RESTORED.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
The woman lifted her face toward the elevator camera.
She looked older than the mother Evelyn remembered.

But she had Isabella’s eyes.
👉 The woman believed dead for eleven years was ascending toward the delivery floor with the biometric key to the newborn’s identity.
