Chapter 4 - THE PARALYSIS PROTOCOLEvelyn regained movement in her right hand shortly after dawn.

The first thing she did was grip Vittorio’s fingers.
The second was point toward Grant’s forged folder.
Nora helped her use the communication tablet.
HE KNEW ABOUT TRUST.
Vittorio nodded.
The DeLuca Family Trust had a succession clause that transferred enhanced voting power to Evelyn after the birth of her first legally recognized child. Grant knew about it because Evelyn had shown him the documents during their engagement.
He had always dismissed the wealth.
“I married you, not your father’s company,” he used to say.
Now the forged papers showed a different intention.
If Evelyn became medically incapacitated after giving birth, her spouse could exercise temporary control over her shares while acting as guardian for the child.
Grant had created the perfect crisis.
A newborn heir.
A paralyzed mother.
A husband with emergency authority.
Celeste’s role was less clear.
She believed the baby was genetically hers and Grant’s. Grant promised to divorce Evelyn after gaining the trust and establish Celeste publicly as the child’s mother through a confidential gestational agreement.
The hospital records supported that story.
Evelyn had supposedly agreed to carry an embryo for them after being diagnosed as infertile.
None of it was true.
Evelyn had conceived through IVF after two previous miscarriages. Dr. Vale told her the embryo came from her own eggs and Grant’s sperm.
The pregnancy had been carefully monitored.
Every ultrasound, blood test, and consent form had passed through his office.
Vittorio reviewed the dates.
“Grant began blocking my calls one month before the embryo transfer.”
Evelyn selected letters.
HE SAID YOU THREATENED HIM.
“I never spoke to him.”
Another lie.
Dana brought the toxicology results from Evelyn’s IV bags.
The spinal anesthetic itself was ordinary. The prolonged paralysis came from a neuromuscular agent added to the postpartum pain infusion.
The dose would leave Evelyn conscious but unable to move for hours.
A smaller secondary medication reduced her ability to breathe independently.
Nora’s face hardened.
“If the infusion continued, she could have suffered respiratory arrest.”
Dr. Vale insisted he never ordered the drug.
The electronic prescription came from his account.
Dana searched the access logs.
The order had been entered through a terminal in the underground surveillance level.
The same level that received feeds from private suites and fertility laboratories.
Only six people possessed access.
Dr. Vale.
The hospital director.
The head of private security.
Dana.
Grant, through a temporary donor-family credential.
And an unnamed legacy account labeled V.V.
Vittorio DeLuca’s initials.
Dana looked toward him.
“Did you ever retain hospital system access?”
“No.”
Dr. Vale laughed bitterly.
“Your company funded the surveillance floor. Your biometric profile remains the master override.”
“I have not entered this hospital in three years.”
“Yet your elevator opened every secure door tonight.”
“Because Evelyn’s emergency code restored my authority.”
The distinction mattered, but it did not clear him.
Someone had used Vittorio’s dormant credentials before the surgery.
The hospital’s facial-recognition system displayed a grainy image of an older man entering the underground level at 5:48 a.m.
Same height.
Same silver hair.
Same profile.
Vittorio stared at the screen.
“That is not me.”
The image was too blurred to confirm identity.
But Grant watched from the interview room and began smiling again.
He had found another direction for suspicion.
Dana enlarged the visitor’s hand.
The man carried an encrypted tablet bearing the DeLuca family crest.
Only three such tablets existed.
Vittorio owned one.
Evelyn owned one.
The third had belonged to Isabella DeLuca before her death.
Vittorio whispered, “That tablet was buried with my wife.”
Evelyn’s fingers tightened around his hand.
Then the underground elevator began moving again.
May you like
Someone had activated it from below.
👉 The drug order came from Vittorio’s stolen credentials, and an unknown visitor was now rising from the secret surveillance level.
