Chapter 13 - SERAPHINE’S PLEA OFFER

Seraphine accepted responsibility partially.

Plea:

Misdemeanor assault/battery for intentionally kicking the suitcase into me.

No serious fetal injury.

No weapon enhancement.

Restitution for medical costs.

Probation.

No direct contact with me through delivery and postpartum period unless court later modified.

Conflict counseling.

Her statement:

“I intended to force Kerensa to leave the garage. I did not intend for her to fall.”

Intent to force.

There.

Then:

“I had no right to do that.”

Good.

No:

I was only helping.

Then civil settlement.

She offered:

Pay my deductible.

Replace damaged suitcase.

Reimburse extra hotel costs caused by incident.

No payment for “emotional damages” unless I waived broader claims.

Naomi asked what I wanted.

“Documented costs.”

Good.

No revenge jackpot.

Then Seraphine wanted one term:

No public statements describing her as trying to steal the baby.

We agreed because evidence did not show a legal custody plot.

Truth matters.

We could describe:

She told me only the baby stays.

She packed my things.

She participated in coercive plan.

No claim she had legal power she did not have.

Then Hadrian’s diversion.

He completed course.

Paid Seraphine’s medical copay and damaged suitcase? His throw burst suitcase. He reimbursed that too.

He hated paying.

Still.

He said:

“I know it’s right. I’m allowed to hate it.”

Yes.

Then Leander asked to see Hadrian privately.

Hadrian agreed in a company conference room with board chair nearby.

Not recorded secretly.

He told me afterward.

Leander:

“I changed the will.”

Hadrian:

“I know.”

“I did not do it because of Kerensa.”

“You did it because I won’t let you control my household.”

“I did it because you abandoned succession.”

“I’m back at work.”

“You refused the future.”

There.

Leander could not separate job from inheritance.

Hadrian could now.

Then Leander said:

“The child will still inherit.”

Hadrian:

“That is between you and your estate lawyer.”

Good.

Then:

“Will Kerensa let me know my grandchild?”

Hadrian paused.

“That depends on whether you can know the baby without managing us.”

Strong.

No blanket no.

No automatic yes.

Then Leander asked:

“What about Seraphine?”

Hadrian answered:

“Not now.”

Fine.

Then he came home.

Said:

“I think Dad is scared.”

“Of what?”

“Dying without control.”

Leander was sixty-four, not dying.

But mortality had entered after his own father? Unknown. Maybe company age. Still.

Maybe not literal dying soon.

Legacy.

Hadrian corrected:

“Not death exactly. Becoming irrelevant.”

That made sense.

Same fear as Seraphine.

They fought differently.

Then my own fear.

Becoming only mother.

The garage had reduced me to:

Womb.

Temporary carrier.

Obstacle.

I had begun overcorrecting by wanting every decision centered on me.

I caught myself.

Nursery furniture.

Hadrian asked where to put dresser.

I snapped:

“I decide.”

He stopped.

Then I heard myself.

“No. Sorry.”

We decided together.

Control reproduces easily when you are hurt by it.

That became my work.
