Chapter 22 - THE BABY ARRIVES WITHOUT AN AUDIENCE

Labor lasted seventeen hours.

No family drama.

That was the miracle.

Not medical miracle.

Administrative.

My mother came.

Hadrian stayed.

Nurses came and went.

No Leander.

No Seraphine.

No company calls.

Hadrian turned his phone off.

The baby was born healthy.

We had chosen not to know sex beforehand.

A daughter.

Small.

Loud.

Perfectly ordinary.

We named her Elara.

Not Leander’s choice.

Not Seraphine’s blanket initials.

Ours.

Elara Mercer.

When the nurse placed her on my chest, I cried harder than I expected.

Not because I had “won” her.

Because she had never been a prize.

She was simply here.

Hadrian touched her hair.

“Hi.”

His voice broke.

Then:

“No one gets to turn you into a contract.”

I looked at him.

“Maybe don’t make legal speeches at a newborn.”

He laughed through tears.

Good.

Then hospital registration.

Parents:

Kerensa Mercer.

Hadrian Mercer.

No grandparents.

Simple.

Then Hadrian asked:

“Photo to Dad?”

I looked at Elara.

At him.

“Not yet.”

He nodded.

No pressure.

Three hours later, I changed my mind.

One photograph.

Elara sleeping.

No hospital room details.

Message:

She is healthy. Kerensa is stable. We are resting.

Leander replied:

Thank you. I am glad you are both safe.

Nothing else.

Good.

Seraphine got no direct photo.

Hadrian asked if he could tell her through counsel baby healthy.

I said yes.

No image.

Boundary.

Then postpartum exhaustion.

Pain.

Feeding.

Nurses.

All the family drama shrank.

At 2 a.m. I cried because I could not get comfortable.

Hadrian looked terrified.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

“What do you need?”

“I don’t know.”

Better question would have been maybe pain medication or nurse. We called.

Normal.

Then discharge planning.

Where home?

Our house.

No debate.

Then Leander sent flowers to hospital.

I almost rejected.

Card:

For Kerensa and Elara. No visit requested.

We kept.

A gift can be just a gift if behavior supports it.

Then Seraphine sent nothing.

Correct under order.

Then Naomi messaged:

No urgent legal matters.

Best message.

Then company board emailed Hadrian congratulations.

No succession.

Good.

Then we packed hospital suitcase.

My own clothes.

Baby’s clothes.

Hadrian held Elara.

I zipped.

No one else choosing what stayed.

That small act nearly undid me.

Then we drove home.

The garage door remained closed.

I asked Hadrian to use front entrance.

He did not ask why.

He understood.

We carried our daughter across the threshold.

No Leander.

No Seraphine.

No movers.

No threat.

Just us.

But the biggest confrontation was not over yet.

Because Leander had requested a meeting about the final estate and company separation.

And Seraphine’s no-contact period would eventually end.

We still had to decide what access, if any, family would have after the crisis.
