Chapter 9 - THE DRAFT THEY NEVER EXPECTED ME TO READ
Discovery in the house-sale case produced emails.
Not because we demanded estate secrets generally.
Because Leander claimed the sale was connected to a broader family occupancy plan.
By making that claim, he made certain communications relevant.
One email from Seraphine to Leander:
Once Hadrian realizes the house and company are both tied to family continuity, he will stop indulging her.
Leander:
The house is already sold. We cannot use what is no longer mine.
Seraphine:
Then use what is.
Company.
Inheritance.
Grandchild.
There.
Leander did not reply.
Another email days later:
I want Kerensa out before Hadrian returns from Denver.
Leander:
No.
Seraphine:
You said separation would make him think clearly.
Leander:
I said we should propose temporary separate housing after the birth. Not throw her out.
Important.
Then Seraphine:
She won’t agree if we ask.
Leander:
Then she won’t agree.
That surprised me.
Maybe Leander had limits after all.
Then why did he stand in the garage and say deliver the baby and leave?
Because once the confrontation began, he joined it.
Cowardice.
Control.
Rage.
Not original violence.
Still culpable.
Then another email from Leander after he learned Hadrian bought the house:
He has removed the residence from my leverage entirely.
Leverage.
His word.
Then:
If he walks from the company too, the only remaining structure is inheritance.
There.
And:
I will not leave voting control to Hadrian if he abandons the enterprise. It should pass to his child through trust.
Central mechanism almost explicit.
Then Seraphine:
Exactly. The baby stays connected even if Kerensa takes him away.
Him.
They apparently assumed baby male? We hadn't established. Better they used "the baby". Let's keep neutral.
Leander replied:
Do not speak about the child as property.
There.
He knew.
Again.
Then she wrote:
You know what I mean.
Maybe.
Then final attachment.
Draft Family Continuity Outline.
Three scenarios.
A:
Hadrian stays at company, receives succession consideration, family lives independently.
B:
Hadrian leaves company but remains in family residence network; inheritance reduced, descendant trust funded.
C:
Hadrian leaves company and separates fully from family; direct inheritance eliminated, future child trust funded at Leander’s discretion.
None of it legally required Kerensa to leave her baby.
None of it gave Leander custody.
Then why the postpartum residence agreement?
To preserve contact and influence while Hadrian worked.
Seraphine had transformed that into:
Only the baby stays.
The difference between draft policy and garage violence was her escalation.
But Leander had created the leverage environment.
Then one note under Scenario C:
Seraphine proposes child remain at primary Mercer residence for first twelve months if Kerensa relocates.
Leander handwritten:
Not enforceable. Only voluntary.
He knew.
Then why did he say deliver the baby and leave?
When asked in deposition later, he would have to answer.
The central secret was now documented enough.
Ch10 would force it into one clear truth.
That night Hadrian and I sat at our kitchen table.

The house finally empty of Leander and Seraphine.
Hadrian said:
“I thought Dad wanted me to inherit the company because he trusted me.”
“He wanted continuity.”
“Not same.”
“No.”
Then:
“I bought this house to get free of leverage and still kept waiting for his approval.”
I touched his hand.
Not comfort.
Recognition.
Then my phone buzzed.
Naomi.
The family estate lawyer had agreed to provide a formal declaration clarifying Leander’s current plan, because Leander wanted to end speculation about custody.
