Chapter 24 - SERAPHINE ASKS TO SEE ELARA

Six weeks postpartum.

Seraphine’s no-contact restriction reached review point.

Not automatic access.

She petitioned for permission to send one supervised video apology to me.

Not Elara.

Me.

Court allowed through therapist/mediator.

She appeared on screen.

No performance.

“Kerensa.”

I waited.

“I kicked the suitcase because I wanted you to leave and I thought fear would make you move faster.”

Good.

“I knew Leander wanted a temporary separation plan. I knew you had not agreed.”

Good.

“I packed your things and left the nursery because I wanted Hadrian to see a house where you were removable and the baby was not.”

There.

Full ownership.

“I did not plan for you to fall.”

I believed that might be true.

“But I caused it.”

Yes.

Then:

“I used inheritance because I knew Hadrian feared losing his father’s approval.”

Yes.

“I wanted him to blame you eventually.”

There.

Not legal motive.

Personal.

Then:

“I do not have a right to meet Elara.”

Good.

“What do you want?”

She cried.

“To become someone who could be considered safe one day.”

Better than:

I want baby.

Then:

“I know that is not your job.”

Good.

Video ended.

Hadrian asked:

“How do you feel?”

“Angry.”

“Anything else?”

“Less afraid.”

That mattered.

Mystery makes monsters bigger.

Accountability shrinks uncertainty.

Then Leander.

He had not requested visits again after the failed settlement.

He sent occasional neutral messages to Hadrian.

Work.

Health.

Nothing about Elara.

Then my mother said:

“He’s waiting.”

“Good.”

“Do you want him to?”

“Yes.”

Waiting without pressure was evidence.

Then company succession program.

Hadrian advanced to final two candidates.

No guarantee.

Leander recused from final recommendation under board rules.

Good.

Hadrian said:

“If I get it, everyone will think Dad arranged.”

“Some will.”

“If I don’t, everyone will think scandal killed it.”

“Some will.”

“So?”

“Do the job.”

He laughed.

Good.

Then Leander sent Elara no gifts for six weeks.

I noticed.

Not because I wanted gifts.

Because restraint.

Then one card arrived.

No money.

Elara, welcome to the world. I hope someday I earn the chance to know you.

I cried.

Annoying.

Then we agreed to first visit.

Not at our house.

Park.

Thirty minutes.

Hadrian and me present.

No holding Elara unless we offer.

Leander accepted.

When he arrived, he stopped three feet away.

“She’s beautiful.”

I almost said:

All babies are.

Instead:

“Thank you.”

He did not reach.

Ten minutes later, Elara fussed.

I adjusted blanket.

Leander looked away, giving privacy.

Good.

At minute twenty-five, Hadrian said:

“Do you want to hold her?”

Leander looked at me.

Not Hadrian only.

Good.

I nodded.

He washed hands with sanitizer.

Sat.

Hadrian placed Elara in his arms.

Leander cried silently.

No speech about legacy.

No:

Mercer girl.

No:

company.

Just:

“Hi.”

Thirty minutes ended.

He gave her back immediately.

That did more than any contract.

May you like

But Seraphine’s future contact remained unresolved.

And the company decision was due in three days.
