Chapter 2 - Marcus Lowers His Voice

Marcus lowered his gaze after Claire saw the number.
That terrified her more than if he had stared.
Respect looked unfamiliar when directed at her.
For the past six months, Claire had become used to being spoken over. Her husband’s family called her emotional. His friends called her dramatic. His mother called her decorative when she wanted to sound kind and useless when she did not.
That morning, after the final fight, her husband had placed her suitcase outside the front door and told her the marriage would be handled “quietly.”
Quietly meant she would leave with nothing.
Quietly meant he would keep the house, the accounts, the invitations, the narrative.
Quietly meant Claire would disappear politely.
But now Marcus looked as if the bank itself had been waiting for her to arrive.
The branch manager stepped beside him.
“I need you to come with me, Ms. Vale.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around the dusty card.
“No.”
The word escaped before she could soften it.
The manager stopped immediately.
Not offended.
Careful.
Claire noticed that too.
People who believed they held power did not stop when she said no.
The manager nodded once.
“Of course. We can speak here until you feel comfortable.”
The security officers remained at a respectful distance. Their posture was not threatening. It was protective.
Claire looked from them to Marcus.
“What is happening?”
Marcus swallowed.
The manager answered instead.
“Your father placed several instructions on this account years ago. One of them required immediate branch-level escalation if this card was ever presented by you.”
Claire’s heart began beating too hard.
“My father never had money like this.”
The manager’s expression did not change, but something in her eyes deepened.
“Your father did many things quietly.”
Claire looked down at the card.
Dust still clung to its edge.
May you like
She had almost thrown it away.
