Chapter 7 - Marcus Knows the Number

Marcus had seen wealthy clients before.
Old money.
New money.
Loud money.
Quiet money.
But he had never seen an account like Claire’s attached to a woman who walked in looking as if she expected to be turned away.
That contradiction shook him.
He stood outside the private office holding the printed receipt he had not handed her because the manager told him not to reduce the moment to a number.
A number could be copied.
A number could be stolen.
A number could make a frightened person trust the wrong voice too quickly.
Still, Marcus knew what he had seen.
Nine digits.
Not just enough to survive.
Enough to become unreachable.
Claire looked through the glass at him.
He straightened instantly.
Not because he feared her.
Because suddenly he understood she had been mistreated by people who had no idea what stood behind her name.
The manager opened the office door halfway.
“Marcus, please prepare the secure client room.”
His eyes widened.
“Yes, ma’am.”
Claire looked confused.
“There’s another room?”
The manager nodded.
“This office is for routine private banking. Your father’s instructions require more privacy.”
More privacy.
More doors.
More stages.
Claire’s hand tightened around the card.
“I don’t want to be locked in anywhere.”
“Then the door stays open,” the manager said immediately.
Again, choice.
Claire nodded.
As she stood, her phone buzzed again.
This time, a message preview flashed from her husband.
She did not read it fully.
She only saw enough words to understand the tone had changed.
Not angry now.
Urgent.
Claire turned the screen dark.
Her life, only hours ago, had been something others decided around her.

Now everyone was waiting for her next step.
