Chapter 6 - The Call She Does Not Answer

Claire’s smartphone buzzed inside her silver clutch.

She flinched.

The manager’s eyes moved to the purse.

Claire took the phone out.

Her husband’s name lit the screen.

For a moment, the bank lobby disappeared.

She saw the suitcase by the door.

The cold way he said she was embarrassing him.

The way his mother watched from the staircase, smiling.

The way Claire had walked out in the gown because changing clothes would have meant asking permission to go back upstairs.

The phone kept vibrating.

Marcus looked through the glass.

The security officers shifted slightly, alert but calm.

The manager said nothing.

Claire watched the screen until the call ended.

Then it started again.

Her husband had probably realized she had not gone to the cheap motel he expected.

Or maybe a card alert had already touched something outside the bank.

Claire did not know.

She turned the phone face down.

The manager’s respect deepened.

“Would you like us to document that contact?”

Claire swallowed.

“Document?”

“Yes.”

Such a simple word.

Her husband had always called things misunderstandings.

Arguments.

Stress.

Marital issues.

The bank called them contact.

Something that could be recorded without pleading.

Claire nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

The manager made a note inside a separate bank file without showing the contents.

The phone buzzed a third time.

Claire did not touch it.
