Chapter 8 - The Secure Client Room

The secure client room was hidden behind frosted glass and a quiet hallway.
No gold sign.
No dramatic vault door.
Just silence, thick carpet, and a conference table beneath soft lighting.
The floral arrangement here was smaller.
White roses.
Fresh water.
Perfectly cut stems.
Claire entered slowly, the branch manager beside her, Marcus behind them at a respectful distance, and one security officer remaining near the hall.
The manager placed the original card in a small tray.
“May I?”
Claire nodded.
The manager handled it as if it were historic.
Not because of the plastic.
Because of what it triggered.
Claire sat, feeling the pale blue gown press against her knees. She suddenly became aware of how strange she must look: formal dress, messy hair, exhausted face, carrying a clutch like a woman who had fled a party rather than a marriage.
The manager sat across from her.
“Before we proceed, I need to confirm something verbally.”
Claire’s heart tightened.
“What?”
“Are you here voluntarily?”
The question made her eyes burn.
No one had asked that in years.
Not really.
“Yes.”
“Is anyone forcing you to access this account?”
“No.”
“Is anyone currently threatening you?”
Claire paused.
Her husband’s calls sat like weight inside the silent phone.
“My husband threw me out,” she said. “I don’t know what he’ll do when he finds out where I am.”
The manager’s expression did not change, but Marcus went pale again.
The security officer near the hall adjusted his stance.
“We can protect your privacy while you are here,” the manager said.
Claire looked at the dusty card.
“My father knew this could happen.”
The manager gave the smallest nod.
“He prepared for several possibilities.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Her father, the clock repairman, had left her time.
Not just money.
Time to breathe.
Time to choose.
May you like
Time to not go back.
