Chapter 5 - The Standing Instructions

The manager opened the folder only to the first page, angling it away so no readable details showed.

Claire saw signatures.

Stamps.

A black fountain pen clipped to the inside edge.

Nothing she could fully understand.

The manager placed one hand over the page.

“Your father left standing instructions involving your arrival, your marital status, and any attempt by another party to restrict your access.”

Claire’s breath stopped.

“My marital status?”

The manager’s face remained calm.

“Yes.”

Claire almost laughed.

Her father had died before he ever met her husband.

How could he have known?

Then she remembered the way he watched people.

Quietly.

Patiently.

The way his clocks lined the walls, all ticking at different speeds, while he listened more than he spoke.

Her father had never seemed powerful.

But he had always been precise.

“What did he think would happen to me?” Claire asked.

The manager softened.

“He did not leave emotions in the instructions, Ms. Vale. Only protections.”

Protections.

The word hurt.

Because it meant he had imagined a world where she might need them.

Claire gripped the dusty card.

“My husband threw me out this morning.”

Marcus, visible through the glass, lowered his eyes.

The manager did not look surprised.

That frightened Claire.

“What did the alert say?” Claire whispered.

The manager folded the page closed.

“I cannot disclose the full mechanism yet.”

Claire stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because your father designed this to open in stages.”

Stages.

The fortune was not the whole secret.

It was only the first door.

Claire looked at the card again.

Her humiliation began shifting into something else.

Not joy.

Not yet.

Power was too heavy when it arrived after abandonment.
