PART 2

Victor had always hated losing control.

Claire learned that slowly.

Then all at once.

When they first met, he was charming in the way powerful men are charming when they know every door opens before they touch it.

He owned a private logistics company with government contracts.

He wore dark suits.

He spoke gently in public.

He remembered names.

He made waiters feel seen and women feel chosen.

Claire was a neonatal nurse when Victor first saw her at a charity fundraiser.

He said she had the kindest eyes in the room.

She believed him because she wanted kindness to recognize kindness.

Within a year, they married.

Within two years, Claire was pregnant.

That was when Victor changed.

Not overnight.

Not loudly.

He began with concern.

Too much work was bad for the baby.

Her friends made her anxious.

Her brother asked too many questions.

Her bank accounts should be simplified.

Her phone location should always be on for safety.

Every suggestion sounded like love until it started to feel like a locked door.

Claire pushed back.

Victor smiled less.

When Lily was born, Claire thought motherhood would soften him.

Instead, Lily made him colder.

He barely touched the baby.

He hated the crying.

He hated the doctors.

He hated that Claire’s attention belonged to someone who could not flatter him.

Three weeks after the birth, Claire found the first file.

It was inside Victor’s locked desk.

A life insurance policy.

A corporate succession trust.

A document naming Victor as sole beneficiary of several assets tied to Claire’s inherited family shares.

She photographed everything.

Then she found the travel plan.

A winter drive.

A remote cabin.

A road with weak cell service.

Victor walked in before she could put the folder back.

For one second, his face showed the truth.

Then he smiled.

“You should not be in here.”

Claire knew then.

She called her brother from the bathroom that night.

He did not answer.

So she left a voicemail.

“If something happens to me or Lily, do not believe Victor.”

She thought that would be enough.

She did not know Victor had already changed the plan.

Two days later, he suggested a family trip to “reset everything.”

He packed the car himself.

He placed Lily’s seat in the back.

He kissed Claire’s forehead.

May you like

And he drove them straight into the storm.
