PART 5

Victor mourned beautifully.

That was what made people trust him.

He wore black suits.

He lowered his eyes at the right moments.

He kept Claire’s photograph on his office desk.

He donated to a maternal health foundation in her name.

He created the Lily Hale Memorial Fund before anyone had found a body.

That detail made Agent Reyes pause.

Most grieving fathers refuse past tense until forced.

Victor rushed into legacy.

Three weeks after the memorial, he was seen with Vanessa Whitlock.

Publicly, he called her an old family friend.

Privately, she was the daughter of a senator tied to one of Victor’s largest contracts.

The engagement happened fast.

Too fast for grief.

Too convenient for business.

Vanessa believed she was rescuing a broken man.

Victor let her believe it.

Claire saw one photo from surveillance.

Vanessa holding Victor’s arm outside a private club.

Victor’s face composed.

Not happy.

Strategic.

Claire felt no jealousy.

Only horror.

“Does she know?” Claire asked.

Agent Reyes shook his head.

“Not enough.”

“Then warn her.”

“We tried through counsel.”

“And?”

“She thinks we are harassing a grieving widower.”

Claire looked down at Lily sleeping in her arms.

“She is marrying a man who left his newborn to die.”

Reyes was quiet.

Then he said, “The wedding gives us one chance.”

Victor had invited half the political donor class of Washington and Seattle.

Federal agents had probable cause, but the broader case needed the people behind him to be in the same place, using the same devices, responding to the same pressure.

The wedding would be watched.

The chapel wired through legal warrant.

The exits covered.

Claire did not need to attend.

Everyone told her that.

Mark begged her not to.

Ruth called her stubborn in three languages and said the baby had already survived enough.

But Claire knew Victor.

If he was arrested in a boardroom, he would become a victim of politics.

If he was confronted privately, he would deny everything.

But if the wife and baby he buried in lies walked into his wedding, his face would tell the truth before his lawyers could stop it.

So Claire chose the champagne gown.

Not white.

Not black.

Not widow.

Not ghost.

Alive.
