PART 7

Victor fought the arrest like a man who had always believed consequences were for employees.

He pulled away from the first agent.

Another took his arm.

The flower arch shook behind him.

White petals fell across his black shoes.

“Do you know who I am?” he shouted.

Agent Reyes answered, “Yes.”

“That is why we are here.”

Vanessa stood frozen beside the altar.

Her veil slipped from one shoulder.

She looked at Claire like she was seeing both a stranger and her own future.

“I didn’t know,” Vanessa whispered.

Claire believed her.

Not because Vanessa was innocent in every way.

But because terror has a sound when it first discovers it was dressed as love.

Victor turned on Vanessa.

“Do not speak to her.”

That single command finished whatever spell remained.

Vanessa stepped away.

“My God.”

“You were going to marry me with her memorial money still in your foundation.”

Victor’s face twisted.

“Vanessa, stop.”

She looked at the agents.

“I want a lawyer.”

“Not for him.”

“For me.”

That was when the senator in the second row stood.

Vanessa’s father.

His face was the color of ash.

Agent Reyes signaled another team.

The investigation moved like a net tightening.

Phones were collected under warrant.

Donor aides were separated.

Victor’s CFO was escorted from the back pew.

A board member tried to leave through the side exit and found an agent already waiting.

Claire watched from the aisle while holding Lily.

Her body began to shake now that the first danger had passed.

Mark came from the rear of the chapel and put his coat around her shoulders.

“You did it,” he whispered.

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“She did.”

She looked at Lily.

The baby was calm.

Alive.

Warm.

Everything Victor had tried to turn into a memory.

As agents led Victor down the aisle, he stopped beside Claire.

His voice dropped low.

“You ruined everything.”

Claire looked at him.

“No.”

“I survived what you planned.”

He leaned closer.

“You will never be safe.”

Before Claire could answer, Vanessa spoke from behind him.

“She will be safer than any woman near you.”

Victor looked back.
