PART 6

The wedding chapel smelled of white roses and expensive candles.

Guests filled every pew.

Judges.

Donors.

Executives.

Senators’ aides.

People who believed wealth made evil less likely because it wore better shoes.

Victor stood at the altar in a black tuxedo.

Vanessa stood beside him in white lace.

The minister smiled.

The string quartet played softly.

Federal agents sat among the guests like shadows in tailored suits.

Claire waited outside the chapel doors with Lily in her arms.

Agent Reyes stood beside her.

“You can still walk away.”

Claire looked at the sleeping baby.

“I already did.”

The doors opened.

The music faltered.

One guest turned.

Then another.

Then the whole chapel.

Claire stepped inside.

Every eye found her.

The whispers came first.

Then gasps.

Then complete silence.

Victor turned.

His face emptied.

That was the first confession.

Vanessa looked from Claire to Victor.

Confusion became fear.

Claire walked three steps and stopped.

“Congratulations on your wedding, Victor.”

Victor’s body seemed to remember performance before his mind did.

He pointed toward the aisle.

“Security…”

His voice cracked.

“Get her out!”

Agent Reyes stood.

“No one moves.”

“This wedding is under federal control.”

The room erupted.

Federal agents blocked exits.

Phones were lowered by trembling hands.

Victor stepped backward into the flower arch.

Vanessa’s bouquet shook.

Claire walked forward slowly.

Lily opened her eyes.

Victor saw the baby’s face.

His knees almost failed.

Claire’s voice did not rise.

“You left us in the snow and called it grief.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Victor…”

“What did you do?”

Victor opened his mouth.

No lie came fast enough.

That was the second confession.

Reyes approached the altar.

“Victor Hale, you are under federal arrest for conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and attempted murder.”

A woman in the front row screamed.

Victor looked at Claire.

Not with remorse.

With rage.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

The chapel heard it.

Every guest.

Every agent.

Every microphone authorized by warrant.

Claire held Lily closer.

Vanessa stepped away from him as if the floor beneath him had cracked open.

Victor realized too late that his perfect wedding had become his confession booth.
