part 3

PART 3
The blizzard swallowed the highway before sunset.
Snow slammed against the windshield.
The road disappeared in strips of white.
Lily slept in the back seat, bundled in a pink blanket.
Claire watched Victor’s hands on the wheel.
They were steady.
Too steady.
“Maybe we should turn back,” she said.
Victor did not look at her.
“We are almost there.”
Claire checked her phone.
No signal.
Her stomach tightened.
“Victor.”
He kept driving.
A mile later, he pulled onto a narrow service road.
There was no sign.
No cabin light.
No tire tracks.
Only trees and snow.
“Why are we stopping?”
Victor turned off the engine.
The sudden silence was worse than the storm.
He looked at her then.
Not angry.
Not sad.
Empty.
“I gave you every chance to make this easy.”
Claire’s hand moved toward the door.
Victor grabbed her wrist.
“You should have signed the trust amendment.”
Lily woke and began to cry.
Claire screamed his name.
Victor reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a syringe.
Claire fought him.
Her elbow struck his jaw.
The needle slipped.
He cursed.
She grabbed Lily from the car seat with shaking hands and kicked the passenger door open.
Snow hit her like a wall.
She ran.
Barefoot inside winter boots she had not tied.
Bleeding from her wrist.
Holding her newborn against her chest.
Behind her, Victor shouted once.
Then stopped.
That was what terrified her most.
He did not chase her for long.
He did not need to.
The temperature would do what his hands had failed to finish.
Claire stumbled through the trees.
Her breath burned.
Lily cried weakly.
Claire tucked the baby beneath her coat and kept walking toward what she hoped was road noise.
Minutes became impossible to measure.
Her legs went numb.
Her fingers stopped obeying.
At some point, she fell.
She remembers the snow against her cheek.
Lily’s small body warm beneath her coat.
A light moving between the trees.
A woman’s voice.
“Dear God, there’s a baby.”
Claire tried to speak.
Only one word came out.
“Victor.”
Then darkness took her.
When she woke, she was in a small rural clinic under a different name.
A federal agent sat beside the bed.
Her brother stood near the door, crying silently.
And Lily was alive in a warmer beside her.
Claire closed her eyes and understood.
The storm had not taken them.
May you like
It had hidden them long enough to come back.
