Chapter 1 - The Boy at the Glass Doors

A battered teenager returns home to face the stepmother who arranged his attack, then raises a hidden drive as police lights expose the secret she believed she had erased.
The glass entrance doors swung open against the stormy Denver night.
Ethan Hale stumbled into the mansion with one hand pressed against his ribs.
His navy school blazer was torn.
His striped tie hung loose.
His white shirt was stained and wrinkled.
His face was bruised, but his eyes were still open.
The marble foyer shone beneath crystal chandeliers and the warm glow of the rectangular fireplace.
Snow moved beyond the windows.
Victoria Hale stood near the black console table in her silver satin gown, diamonds flashing at her throat like ice.
Richard Hale froze beside the fireplace, gray hair perfect, dark suit immaculate, face already trembling with guilt.
The family attorney stood near him, disinheritance folder in hand, watching Ethan as if the boy had walked in from a nightmare.
Richard stepped forward.
“Victoria, call an ambulance. He can barely stand.”
Victoria turned on him with one vicious glare.
Richard stopped.
Ethan saw it.
Even half-broken, he saw his father obey fear faster than love.
Victoria crossed the marble toward him, silver heels striking hard.
She shoved the disinheritance folder against Ethan’s chest.
He did not take it.
Her face twisted.
“Your father is disowning you tonight. Sign and disappear.”
Ethan’s knees shook.
But his hand stayed near his watchband.
Victoria drove one hand into his shoulder.
He fell onto the marble.
Richard moved again, half a step.
Then stopped again.
Victoria planted her silver heel against the torn side of Ethan’s blazer, pinning the fabric beside his ribs.
“Six football players couldn’t break you, so I’ll finish it myself.”
Ethan looked up at her.
Blood at his lip.
Cold fire in his eyes.
Then his hand snapped to her ankle.
He knocked her heel away, rolled onto one knee, and tore open the damaged watchband.
A tiny black drive appeared between his bruised fingers.
“You deleted the cameras, but you forgot the backup.”
Victoria’s smile died.
Outside, red-and-blue lights swept across the glass doors.
Her face collapsed.
