Chapter 9 - The Drive in His Bruised Fingers

Ethan’s hand hurt.

His fingers were bruised and stiff.

The tiny drive felt impossibly small for the weight it carried.

Victoria stared at it like a weapon.

Richard stared like a confession.

The attorney stared like a legal disaster beginning before him.

Ethan stared only at Victoria.

He refused to look away.

That refusal became its own answer.

Victoria’s lips trembled.

“What exactly did you copy?”

Her voice cracked.

Not loud now.

Not theatrical.

Afraid.

Ethan did not answer.

He did not reveal the recovered footage.

He did not name the people seen in it.

He did not say who contacted the police presence outside.

He did not tell Richard what decision he would have to make.

He only lifted the drive high enough for the red-and-blue lights to strike its metallic edge.

The first flash caught it.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The drive glinted like a signal.

Victoria’s face collapsed.

No one had played anything.

No one had entered.

No one had accused her in official words.

But she looked ruined already.

Richard took another step toward Ethan.

This time, Victoria did not stop him.

Maybe she forgot.

Maybe she knew the old command would fail.

Richard’s hand reached forward, shaking.

Ethan watched it come.

Then stepped back.

Pain tore through his side, but he stayed upright.

Richard’s hand fell.

The rejection was quiet and devastating.

The attorney looked toward the glass doors.

Silhouettes moved beyond them.

Still outside.

Still blurred.

Still unanswered.

The storm pressed against the mansion windows.

Ethan’s school crest, torn but visible, caught a strip of light.

He had come home battered.

May you like

But not empty-handed.

Read Chapter 10 👉 Because Ethan’s silence became more terrifying than any accusation, and Victoria knew the drive held the part of the night she had tried to erase.
