Chapter 8 - The Fireplace and the Glass Doors

The mansion held two kinds of light.
Behind Ethan, the fireplace burned warm and golden, painting the marble floor in soft reflections.
Ahead, beyond the glass doors, red-and-blue flashes cut through the stormy night.
Warmth behind him.
Judgment before him.
Victoria between both, no longer belonging fully to either.
Her silver satin gown shimmered violently each time the lights passed over it.
The diamonds at her throat shook.
She clutched the necklace as if it could hold her together.
Ethan watched the movement.
Her jewelry had always been part of the performance.
A woman of taste.
A woman of class.
A woman whose cruelty came wrapped in elegance.
Now the necklace looked like a collar of panic.
Richard stood under the fireplace glow, pale and shaking.
The attorney stood near the console table, holding the folder away from his body.
Ethan’s damaged phone remained half-dead in his blazer pocket.
The drive was alive in his hand.
Victoria pointed at it.
“Whatever is on there, it was taken illegally.”
Ethan’s mouth curved faintly.
“You don’t know what’s on it.”
Her face twisted.
The mistake was immediate.
She had argued admissibility before content.
The attorney’s eyes narrowed.
Richard whispered, “Victoria…”
She turned on them all.
“He is manipulating you.”
Ethan almost laughed.
He was eighteen, injured, bleeding through his shirt, shaking from pain, and holding one small drive with all the strength he had left.
Still, she called him manipulative.
That was how power spoke when proof arrived.
It insulted the witness.
It questioned the method.
It never asked why the witness had needed proof.
Another sweep of police lights crossed the marble.
Victoria staggered backward.
The heel that had pinned Ethan’s blazer slipped slightly on the polished floor.
For a terrifying second, her face became pure fear.
Then the mask tried to return.
May you like
It failed.
