Chapter 5 - The Backup She Forgot

Ethan did not explain the backup.
That mattered.
He did not name what footage had survived.
He did not reveal who appeared in it.
He did not say who had deleted the original cameras.
He did not say who outside already knew.
He only held the drive.
A tiny black object between bruised fingers.
Enough to make Victoria shake.
The family attorney stared at it with growing alarm.
Richard stared at Ethan.
Not with fatherly courage.
With a desperate hope that his son might save him too without forcing him to admit he needed saving.
Ethan refused to look at him.
Victoria’s voice came sharp.
“Give it to me.”
Ethan said nothing.
She stepped closer.
The red-and-blue lights outside swept across her silver gown, turning the satin briefly violent.
“Ethan.”
The way she said his name was different now.
Not mocking.
Commanding, but cracked.
He looked at her.
“You deleted the cameras, but you forgot the backup.”
The words repeated in the foyer without needing to be spoken again.
Victoria’s throat moved.
Richard whispered, “Deleted?”
Victoria spun toward him.
“Shut up.”
That was her mistake.
The attorney heard it.
Richard heard it.
Ethan heard it.
The entire foyer seemed to hear it.
Deleted had not been denied.
Only silenced.
Richard stepped backward toward the fireplace, his face collapsing into the shape of a man realizing guilt had been managed for him.
“What did you delete?” he asked.
Victoria stared at him with hatred.
Ethan lifted the drive another inch.
The answer stayed hidden.
No footage revealed.
No faces named.
No sequence played.
But Victoria’s terror answered enough for the moment.
Outside, silhouettes shifted behind the glass doors.
Still outside.
Still blurred.
May you like
Still waiting.
