Chapter 4 - Victoria’s Silver Heel

Victoria looked down at her silver heel.

A thin line of dust from Ethan’s blazer fabric clung to the polished edge.

The sight seemed to offend her.

Not because she had pinned him.

Because the evidence had marked her.

She stepped back and rubbed the heel against the marble, hard, elegant, frantic.

Ethan saw the gesture.

So did the attorney.

Victoria noticed them noticing.

Her face twisted violently.

“You attacked me.”

Ethan’s eyes stayed cold.

“I was on the floor.”

“You grabbed my ankle.”

“You were standing on me.”

She inhaled sharply.

The lie had not landed.

In this house, Victoria was used to statements becoming reality because no one challenged them fast enough.

Tonight, each sentence had to survive Ethan’s stare, the attorney’s silence, Richard’s trembling, and the flashing lights beyond the doors.

The old system was failing.

Ethan’s fingers tightened around the drive.

The plastic edge cut into his palm.

He welcomed the pain.

It kept him awake.

Victoria lunged half a step toward him.

The attorney moved before Richard did.

Not fully between them.

Just enough.

Victoria stopped.

Her eyes snapped toward the attorney.

“Are you forgetting who pays you?”

The attorney looked at the disinheritance folder in his hands.

Then at Ethan.

Then at the lights outside.

“I am remembering what I am paid not to ignore.”

Richard’s mouth fell open.

Victoria’s nostrils flared.

Ethan forced himself to stand.

His body resisted.

His knees shook.

His ribs screamed.

But he rose.

Not straight.

Not strong in the way Victoria understood strength.

But upright.

That was enough.

Victoria stared at him as if he had broken a rule deeper than the law.

He was supposed to crawl.

He was supposed to sign.

He was supposed to disappear.

Instead, he stood in the mansion foyer and raised the drive higher.
