Chapter 1 - The Toast Ryan Wasn’t Meant to Hear

A billionaire returns home unexpectedly and finds his exhausted wife washing dishes while his family celebrates with the fortune he sent them.
Ryan came home with a velvet jewelry box in his hand and a smile he had not worn in months.
The Beverly Hills mansion glowed beneath party lights.
Crystal chandeliers spilled gold across the ballroom.
Champagne glasses sparkled on banquet tables.
Laughter rolled through the open patio doors into the night air.
He had flown back early to surprise Emily.
Inside the velvet box was a necklace he had chosen himself, not because it was expensive, but because the stones reminded him of the blue dress she wore the night she first told him she felt invisible inside his family.
Tonight, he meant to change that.
Then he heard the toast.
Ryan stopped behind a decorative column just before entering the ballroom.
A man near the champagne table lifted his glass and laughed loudly.
“Here’s to Ryan’s monthly wire transfers!”
The guests erupted.
Linda, his mother, stood in a fitted black evening gown, diamonds flashing at her throat and wrists. She raised her champagne glass with theatrical delight.
Beside her, Rachel smiled in a champagne-colored dress, too comfortable beneath the chandeliers, too pleased with money that had never belonged to her.
Ryan’s smile disappeared.
His fingers tightened around the velvet box.
He scanned the ballroom.
Linda.
Rachel.
Guests.
Relatives.
Champagne.
Food.
Music.
No Emily.
His heartbeat changed.
Not faster.
Colder.
He stepped out from behind the column and moved toward the kitchen corridor.
A server passed with dirty plates.
Ryan caught the tray edge with one hand, careful not to spill anything.
The server froze.
Ryan’s voice came sharp and breathless.
“Where is my wife?”
The young man’s face went pale.
He pointed toward the patio.
Ryan walked faster.
Then he ripped open the glass door.
Steam rolled from the outdoor service kitchen.
Greasy cookware towered beside the sink.
Cleaning supplies covered the floor.
Harsh light struck metal pots and wet tile.
Emily stood bent over the sink, soaked beige blouse clinging to her shoulders, cream apron stained, long wet dark hair hanging around her tearful face.
Her hands were red and raw from scrubbing.
Linda stood behind her with folded arms.
“Stop resting and finish every pot before dessert.”
Emily turned.
The sponge fell into the water.
“You weren’t supposed to see me like this.”
May you like
Ryan’s face changed into something terrifying.
