Chapter 9 - The Phone in Ryan’s Hand

Ryan did not activate anything.

Not yet.

That restraint tortured them.

Linda stared at his thumb.

Rachel stared at the screen.

Several guests looked between one another, wondering which accounts, cards, transfers, trusts, or invitations might vanish with one touch.

The story did not reveal it.

No financial retaliation.

No names removed.

No fortune blocked.

No final consequences.

Only possibility.

That was enough to turn champagne into fear.

Emily touched Ryan’s sleeve.

“Don’t do it because of me.”

He looked at her.

The room watched.

She tried to stand straighter inside his jacket.

“I don’t want to be the reason you lose family.”

Ryan’s face softened with grief.

“You are the reason I’m seeing them.”

Linda made a wounded sound.

“Ryan.”

He did not look at her.

Emily’s tears spilled again.

“They’ll blame me.”

He gently took her raw hand.

“They already did.”

The truth hurt.

But Emily did not pull away.

Ryan faced the room again.

The guests looked suddenly smaller beneath the chandeliers.

Linda’s diamonds looked heavy.

Rachel’s champagne dress looked like costume.

The banquet tables looked absurdly full.

The service kitchen behind them still steamed with dirty pots.

Ryan lifted the phone higher.

“I sent money because I believed my wife was being cared for here.”

Linda’s eyes went wide.

He continued.

“I came home and found care outside, in an apron, with bleeding hands.”

Emily whispered his name.

He did not stop.

But he did not reveal what he would do next.

His thumb stayed hovering.

The unanswered command glowed beneath it.

Rachel gripped the doorway.

Linda’s mouth shook.

Guests held their glasses frozen midair.

No one toasted now.
