Chapter 8 - Linda’s Smile Breaks

Linda’s smile finally broke completely.
Not fade.
Break.
Her lips trembled.
Her nostrils flared.
Her eyes widened with a rage she could no longer dress as concern.
“You owe us,” she said.
The ballroom seemed to inhale.
Ryan stared at her.
Emily’s grip tightened around the velvet box.
Rachel closed her eyes.
There it was.
The truth beneath every party, every request, every cold instruction.
You owe us.
Ryan’s voice was almost too calm.
“For what?”
Linda lifted her chin.
“For everything this family made you.”
Ryan’s face hardened.
“This family did not make me by starving my wife of dignity.”
Linda recoiled.
“I did not starve her.”
“You fed guests while she washed their plates.”
The sentence silenced her.
Ryan lifted his smartphone again.
Linda’s eyes dropped to the screen.
No readable account information appeared.
Only the glow of power she could not access.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Ryan, please. Let’s all calm down.”
He looked at her champagne dress.
“You were laughing.”
Rachel’s mouth trembled.
“I didn’t know it was this bad.”
Emily’s eyes lifted.
That line cut through her.
Not this bad.
Bad was acceptable, apparently.
Just not this visible.
Ryan saw Emily’s face and turned toward Rachel with controlled fury.
“Bad enough for you to laugh.”
Rachel stepped back into the doorway.
Linda’s bracelet rattled as her hands shook.
Guests began whispering, then stopped when Ryan looked their way.
He walked back to Emily and stood beside her.
Not in front now.
Beside.
She had been hidden long enough.
The phone remained in his hand.
His thumb hovered over an unreadable command.
May you like
Linda stared at it like a loaded weapon.
