Chapter 7 - The Unopened Necklace Box

The velvet jewelry box still sat on the steel counter.
Unopened.
Forgotten by everyone except Emily.
She kept looking at it through the open patio door, as if the small dark box belonged to a different night.
One where Ryan came home smiling.
One where she was not soaked.
One where Linda had not ordered her to finish every pot before dessert.
Ryan noticed her looking.
His expression softened for her only.
“I brought it for you.”
Emily’s face broke.
Not because of the necklace.
Because of the intention.
She had spent the evening being treated like someone who should be grateful for leftovers, for permission, for invisibility.
Then Ryan arrived with proof that he had been thinking of her while flying home.
Linda saw the tenderness and hated it.
“She is manipulating you with tears.”
Ryan turned back to her.
“She is exhausted.”
“She is always exhausted.”
The sentence slipped out too easily.
There it was again.
History.
Not tonight.
Always.
Ryan’s face went cold.
Emily lowered her head.
Linda realized her mistake and tried to recover.
“I mean she is delicate.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“No. You mean useful.”
Linda’s lips trembled.
Rachel whispered, “Linda, stop.”
Ryan looked at Rachel.
“Why? Afraid she’ll say enough?”
Rachel’s eyes filled with panic.
The guests remained still, every champagne glass now lowered.
A cousin near the table quietly set his plate down.
No one wanted to be seen eating while Emily stood wrapped in a jacket with wet hair and injured hands.
Ryan picked up the velvet box from the counter.
He did not open it.
Instead, he placed it in Emily’s hands.
She stared down at it.
Her red, raw fingers trembled against the soft fabric.
It should have been a gift.
Now it looked like evidence of the life she had been denied inside her own marriage.
Ryan looked at Linda, then Rachel, then the watching guests.
His voice dropped.
“What else did you take while I was gone?”
May you like
No one answered.
