Chapter 3 - Linda’s Perfect Excuse

Linda had an excuse ready.

She always did.

That was what made her dangerous.

Her cruelty rarely arrived naked. It wore pearls, perfume, and phrases like tradition, gratitude, family duty, and being useful.

Now she stood in the service kitchen doorway, black evening gown immaculate, diamond necklace blazing above a smile that had begun to shake.

“Emily wanted to contribute,” she said.

Ryan stared at her.

Emily lowered her eyes.

That was the answer.

Not agreement.

Training.

Linda lifted one hand toward the greasy cookware.

“With so many guests, everyone does their part.”

Ryan looked over his shoulder toward the ballroom.

The guests stood holding champagne glasses.

Rachel wore jewelry Ryan had paid for.

The banquet tables sagged beneath catered food.

Flowers overflowed from arrangements large enough to block conversation.

Everyone did their part.

Except only Emily was soaked.

Only Emily’s hands were raw.

Only Emily had been hidden outside.

Ryan stepped closer to Linda.

“Where is her seat?”

Linda blinked.

“What?”

“At dinner. Where is Emily’s seat?”

Linda’s lips parted.

No answer came.

Rachel spoke from behind her.

“She was busy.”

Ryan’s eyes cut to Rachel.

The blonde woman recoiled as if his look had slapped the champagne from her hand.

He took one step toward her.

“Busy with what?”

Rachel’s mouth opened.

Linda snapped, “Ryan, do not interrogate guests.”

“Guests?”

His laugh was short and ugly.

He looked toward the ballroom again.

“These people are drinking from my cellar, eating at my tables, toasting my transfers, and my wife is outside washing their plates.”

Linda’s nostrils flared.

“You are being dramatic.”

Emily moved slightly behind him.

That tiny movement made Ryan’s anger sharpen.

She was still protecting herself from the backlash of his defense.

He looked at her hands.

Then at the pots.

Then at his mother.

“No,” he said. “I am late.”

Linda’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Because she heard the difference.

He was not asking what happened.

He was blaming himself for not seeing it sooner.
