Chapter 3

The name Noah hit Emma before the face did.

Noah.

Six years old.

Brown hair.

Large brown eyes.

Thin wrists.

A habit of holding his breath when scared.

Her Noah had been taken five years earlier.

Not lost in a crowd.

Not missing because of one careless moment.

Taken.

There had been a custody exchange that never completed.

A car that vanished.

A court order ignored.

A police report that turned into years of waiting.

Emma still remembered the last photo.

Noah at eighteen months old, wearing a yellow rain jacket, one tiny hand gripping Michael’s finger.

People told Emma grief softened with time.

It did not.

It changed shape.

It became paperwork.

Phone calls.

Unanswered leads.

False sightings.

Birthdays with no cake.

A nursery packed into boxes because leaving it untouched became unbearable.

Now a six-year-old boy lay on her examination table in Asheville with the same eyes as the child she buried only in her nightmares.

Emma wanted to ask everything.

Where have you been?

Who brought you here?

Who hurt you?

Do you remember me?

But she was a doctor before she could be a mother.

So she did not collapse.

She did not grab him.

She did not frighten him with recognition he might not understand.

She looked at his leg.

His face.

His fear.

Then she began preserving evidence the way survival demanded.
