Chapter 7

Emma nearly dropped the folder.

Dad.

One word.

Small.

Uncertain.

Miraculous.

For five years, Emma had imagined Noah forgetting them completely.

She told herself it would be understandable.

He had been so little.

Too little to hold onto faces.

Too little to hold onto home.

But something had survived.

A voice.

A shape.

A feeling.

Enough for Noah to look at Michael and find the word.

Emma pressed the folder against her chest to steady herself.

She wanted him to look at her too.

Wanted him to say Mom.

Wanted it so badly it frightened her.

But she did not ask.

This was not about what she needed.

It was about what Noah could bear.

Michael stayed on one knee.

“Noah,” he said softly, “you are safe here.”

The boy looked at Emma.

“She said that too.”

“She’s right.”

Noah’s eyes moved between them.

Fear still lived there.

So did confusion.

So did something fragile and new.

Recognition trying to become trust.

Emma turned to Carla.

“Document everything. Chain of custody. Photos, bag, coins, packaging, X-ray.”

Carla nodded.

Beth stood by the door, listening to quiet voices outside the clinic.

Help was coming.

But no one would move Noah carelessly.
