Chapter 6

“Please don’t hit me. I’ll be good.”

The sentence destroyed the room.

Michael froze with his hand in the air.

Carla covered her mouth.

Beth closed the treatment-room door and secured the folder against her chest.

Emma felt the words cut through every year she had spent searching.

Please don’t hit me.

I’ll be good.

No child should speak that sentence to a stranger reaching gently toward them.

No child should speak it at all.

Michael lowered his hand slowly.

Not because he was offended.

Because he understood that Noah had learned fear from someone else’s hands.

“I won’t touch you,” Michael said, voice breaking. “Not unless you say I can.”

Noah blinked.

He seemed confused by permission.

Emma stepped closer, keeping her body between panic and pressure.

“Noah, this is Michael,” she said gently.

The boy looked from Emma to Michael.

Michael’s breath shook.

Emma did not say father yet.

Not before Noah was ready.

Not before his memory found the word on its own.

Michael lowered himself to one knee beside the table.

That made him smaller.

Less threatening.

Noah studied his face.

The rain tapped against the windows.

The clinic seemed to hold its breath.

Then Noah whispered, barely audible:

“Dad?”

Michael’s eyes filled instantly.

He did not reach out.

He only nodded.

“Yes, buddy.”
