Chapter 5

Michael Hayes looked older than thirty-nine.
Not because of age.
Because of searching.
His denim jacket was soaked through, plaid shirt dark with rainwater, hair flattened by the storm.
His eyes were red, not from drink or sleep, but from years of believing every call might be the one that ended the waiting.
Emma had called him ten minutes earlier.
She had not said everything.
She could not.
Not over the phone.
She said only, “Michael, come to the clinic. It may be Noah.”
He did not ask which Noah.
He only breathed once and said, “I’m coming.”
Now he stood in the treatment room doorway, looking at the child on the table.
At the wet hair.
The brown eyes.
The thin frightened body.
The injured leg.
The bag of coins and bottles.
Michael’s face collapsed.
“Who did this to him?”
Emma looked at him.
She wanted to say, I don’t know.
She wanted to say, Not now.
She wanted to say, Don’t scare him.
But Michael was already breaking in silence.
Noah watched him with confusion and fear.
Michael took one careful step closer.
“Noah?”
The boy stiffened.
The name in Michael’s mouth sounded like a memory trying to reach him through fog.
Emma moved slightly, ready to intervene if Noah panicked.
Michael lifted one hand slowly.
Only to touch his forehead.
Only to see if he was real.

Then Noah flinched.
