Chapter 4

The clinic was small but careful.

That mattered.

Rain streaked the windows.

Fluorescent lights hummed above the examination room.

A woman in a green raincoat sat quietly beyond the doorway, watching with concern but saying nothing.

Carla photographed Noah’s injury only with Emma’s permission and gentle explanation.

Beth called the proper emergency protection line from the desk, voice low enough that Noah could not hear the fear in it.

Emma opened a clean page in the medical folder.

No readable notes.

No dramatic labels.

Only facts.

Child arrived alone.

Possible improperly healed fracture.

Visible fear response.

Carrying coins and recyclable bottles.

Conditioned apology behavior.

Noah watched her write.

“Am I in trouble?”

Emma looked up immediately.

“No.”

“Because I came without asking?”

“You did the right thing.”

His eyes filled.

“I wasn’t supposed to.”

“Who told you that?”

He pressed his lips together.

That silence was an answer, but not one Emma could force from him.

She gently lowered the trouser fabric back around his leg.

Noah’s shoulders relaxed a fraction.

Only a fraction.

Emma saw it and kept her hands visible.

Every movement had to say safety.

Every word had to mean it.

Then the front bell rang as the clinic door opened.

Heavy rain blew in.

A man’s voice asked for Dr. Carter.

Emma knew that voice before she turned.

Michael.
