The waiting-room woman in the green raincoat stood when she heard more footsteps outside.
Not threatening footsteps.
Professional ones.
The clinic door opened again.
Emma glanced toward Beth.
Beth nodded once.
The proper responders had arrived.
No arrests were shown.
No confrontation with whoever had harmed Noah began.
No complete explanation unfolded.
Only protection starting to form around the boy.
Michael remained kneeling beside the examination table, hands visible, body still.
Noah looked at him again.
“Did I do bad?”
Michael’s voice broke.
“No.”
“But they said—”
“You did not do bad.”
Noah’s eyes filled.
Emma stepped beside Michael.
Together, but not crowding him.
Noah looked at them both.
His gaze lingered on Emma’s face.
Something flickered.
Not a word.
Not yet.
Maybe memory.
Maybe instinct.
Maybe only trust beginning.
Emma held the folder against her chest and did not move.
If he recognized her today, she would be there.
If he did not, she would still be there tomorrow.
Michael whispered, “We’ve been looking for you.”
Noah stared at him.
Then at Emma.
