Chapter 1 - The Blanket Pulled Away
A hospitalized mother makes her husband question his family after he discovers the bruises from their attempt to steal custody while a hidden camera records every threat.
Eleanor Vance stood outside the VIP maternity suite with a smile sharp enough to cut glass.
The luxury hospital corridor was quiet.
Too quiet.
Bright daylight slipped through the city skyline windows beyond the room, mixing with warm suite lighting, polished floors, cream curtains, and the soft beeping of medical equipment.
Dominic Vance held a black leather portfolio against his gray suit.
Eleanor shoved it harder into his hands and pointed toward Clara’s door.
“Once she signs, the baby comes home with us.”
Inside the room, Clara heard every word.
Her hands clamped around the white blanket covering her legs.
Her newborn daughter slept safely in the transparent bassinet near the window, wrapped in a white blanket, untouched by the storm entering the room.
The door handle turned.
Julian Vance stormed in first.
His white dress shirt was open at the collar.
His hair was perfect.
His face was furious.
He did not look at the bassinet.
He did not ask Clara why she was shaking.
He grabbed the blanket with both fists and ripped it away.
“You can stop acting now.”
The fabric flew across the bed.
Then Julian saw her legs.
The bruises across Clara’s thighs and knees made his whole body lock.
The blanket slipped from his fingers.
Clara reached toward him with one trembling hand.
“Please… don’t let them take our baby.”
Julian dropped to one knee beside the bed.
His breathing turned harsh.
“Who did this to you?”
Clara’s eyes moved toward the closed door.
Above them, a tiny lens glinted inside the ceiling ventilation grate.
The door swung open.
Eleanor entered with Dominic and the custody folder.
Julian surged upright and slammed one hand onto the portfolio before they could reach the bed.
Clara looked past him at Eleanor.
