Chapter 4 - Eleanor’s Smile Collapses

Eleanor Vance had spent decades controlling rooms.

Hospital rooms.

Dining rooms.

Boardrooms.

Funeral rooms.

Rooms where people cried and she decided how much grief was acceptable.

This maternity suite should have belonged to her too.

She had planned it beautifully.

Clara weak in bed.

Julian angry.

Dominic prepared with custody papers.

The newborn sleeping nearby.

A gold pen ready for a signature.

But Julian was no longer looking at Clara with contempt.

He was looking at Eleanor with suspicion.

That broke the choreography.

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“She has always been dramatic.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“She is bruised.”

“She bruises easily.”

Clara gripped the blanket until her knuckles whitened.

Julian saw the flinch.

Not from pain.

From recognition.

He turned back toward Eleanor.

“How would you know?”

The question landed hard.

Dominic looked down.

Eleanor’s jaw tightened.

“I am her mother-in-law. I notice things.”

“No,” Julian said. “You explain things.”

The room went silent.

Even the medical monitor seemed quieter.

The baby stirred softly in the bassinet.

Julian immediately lowered his voice.

That instinct reached Clara like a hand.

For one fragile second, she looked almost relieved.

Eleanor noticed.

Her face twisted.

“You are letting her turn you against your own mother.”

Julian’s eyes flashed.

“You came here with custody papers.”

“To protect your daughter.”

“From Clara?”

“From whatever Clara has become.”

Clara’s tears fell harder.

But she did not look away.

Julian turned toward Dominic.

“What is inside that folder?”

Dominic held the portfolio closer.

“Preliminary documents.”

“Prepared when?”

Dominic did not answer.

Eleanor’s smile was gone now.
