Chapter 2 - The Portfolio at the Door

The black leather portfolio had been prepared before Clara finished bleeding, crying, and holding her daughter for the first time.
That thought entered Julian’s mind slowly.
Then all at once.
Dominic stood just inside the doorway with the folder half-extended, gold pen clipped to the edge, his polished shoes planted like this was a conference room instead of a maternity suite.
Eleanor hovered behind him in emerald green, gold jewelry glowing, eyes bright with outrage that looked rehearsed.
Clara pulled the blanket back over her bruised legs with shaking hands.
Julian noticed the movement and immediately stepped between her and the door.
The bassinet remained near the window.
The baby slept.
Tiny.
Peaceful.
Unaware that adults had entered the room carrying papers like weapons.
Eleanor’s mouth twisted.
“Julian, move.”
He did not.
Dominic cleared his throat.
“These documents only protect the child.”
Julian turned slowly toward him.
“From whom?”
The question made Dominic’s expression tighten.
Eleanor answered too quickly.
“From instability.”
Clara made a soft broken sound behind Julian.
He turned toward her.
Her face was wet with tears, her dark hair loose across the pillow, one hand pressed over the blanket as if she could keep herself from being exposed again.
But her eyes were not confused.
They were terrified.
And now Julian finally understood that her fear had not begun when he entered.
It had been waiting.
Eleanor took one step closer.
“She is exhausted. She is emotional. She does not know what is best for the baby.”
Julian’s jaw clenched.
“She just gave birth.”
“She is not fit.”
Clara looked at Julian.
Not begging now.
Watching.
Measuring whether he would hear the sentence the way he should.
Julian looked from Clara to the bassinet, then to his mother’s folder.
For the first time in his life, Eleanor’s confidence did not comfort him.

It frightened him.
