Chapter 3 - The Camera in the Vent

Clara did not point at the camera.
She only looked.
That was enough.
Julian followed her gaze upward to the ventilation grate above the hospital bed.
At first, he saw only metal slats and shadow.
Then a faint green glint caught the light.
A lens.
Small.
Hidden.
Watching.
His face changed.
Eleanor saw the change and looked up too late.
Dominic followed her gaze.
His fingers tightened around the portfolio.
Julian’s voice came out low.
“What is that?”
Eleanor recovered first.
“A hospital sensor, probably.”
Clara whispered, “No.”
Everyone looked at her.
Her lips trembled, but her voice held.
“It was there before they came in.”
Eleanor’s eyes flashed.
“You are imagining things again.”
Julian turned toward her.
“Again?”
The word slipped out before Eleanor could soften the damage.
Clara closed her eyes briefly.
Again meant history.
Again meant this accusation had been used before.
Again meant Clara had been called unstable enough times for it to become part of the trap.
Dominic stepped in.
“Julian, we should not make assumptions based on—”
Julian raised one hand.
Dominic stopped.
The attorney stopped.
That alone shook the room.
Eleanor stared at her son as if he had just betrayed blood itself.
Julian looked at Clara.
“Did you know about the camera?”
She nodded faintly.
“After.”
“After what?”
Her eyes moved toward her covered legs.
The answer did not need to be spoken.
Julian’s breathing changed again.
Not loud.
Dangerous.
Eleanor stepped toward him.
“Do not let her manipulate you.”
Julian looked back at his mother.
For the first time, he did not see concern.
He saw timing.
The papers.
The threats.
The bruises.
The camera.
And Clara’s terrified sentence.
