Chapter 10 - The Camera Above the Bed

The recordings were not played.
No police arrived.
Custody was not decided.
No arrest was shown.
No final consequence came for Eleanor, Dominic, or the Vance family.
The story ended inside the luxury VIP maternity suite, beneath bright clinical daylight and warm private-suite lighting, with the city skyline beyond the windows, the hospital bed still disheveled, the white blanket pulled over Clara’s bruised legs, and the newborn sleeping safely in the bassinet behind Julian.
Clara sat against the pillows in her cream maternity nightgown and pale blue satin robe.
Her face was tear-streaked.
Her hands still shook.
But her eyes were clearer now.
Julian stood between the bed and the doorway, white shirt wrinkled, watch glinting, wedding ring visible as his hand hovered near the black leather custody portfolio.
His face twisted between horror, guilt, and rising suspicion.
Eleanor stood just inside the room in her emerald pantsuit, mouth slightly open, confidence collapsing as she realized her son was no longer facing Clara.
He was facing her.
Dominic held the thick portfolio close, gold pen frozen against the leather edge, his calculating calm beginning to crack.
Above them, the hidden camera inside the ventilation grate caught a faint glint of light.
Clara looked past Julian and directly at Eleanor.
Her voice was low.
Devastating.
“Your family.”
Julian slowly turned toward his mother.
His eyes burned with disbelief and doubt.
Eleanor tried to speak, but no words came.
The baby remained asleep.
The folder remained closed.
The camera remained silent.

And for the first time since Clara entered that hospital room, the person who looked trapped was not the exhausted mother in the bed.
It was the woman standing near the door with custody papers she suddenly seemed terrified to explain.
