Chapter 9 - The Folder Does Not Open

Julian did not open the custody folder.

Not yet.

He could have grabbed it.

He could have torn it apart.

He could have read every page aloud.

But Clara was shaking behind him.

The newborn was sleeping.

And Dominic’s hand around the portfolio had already revealed enough fear for one moment.

Julian kept his palm on the folder.

“Put it down.”

Dominic looked at Eleanor.

That instinct betrayed him.

Julian saw it.

“So she directs you.”

Dominic’s lips tightened.

“I represent the family’s interests.”

Julian’s laugh was short and bitter.

“Not my wife’s.”

Dominic did not answer.

“Not my daughter’s.”

Still nothing.

Clara whispered, “Julian.”

He turned immediately.

Her face was pale, exhausted, and wet with tears.

“Don’t let them take her.”

His expression changed.

He moved back beside the bed, still keeping himself between Clara and the door.

“They won’t take her from this room tonight.”

Eleanor’s face went white.

“You cannot promise that.”

Julian looked at her.

“I just did.”

No final custody decision was made.

No legal authority explained.

No police arrived.

No recording played.

But the promise changed the air.

Not because it solved anything.

Because it was the first promise Clara had heard from him since the room became a battlefield.

The baby stirred softly.

Julian looked toward the bassinet.

Then back at Clara.

Eleanor moved her hand toward the portfolio again.

Julian’s head snapped toward her.

“Don’t.”

Eleanor froze.

Her eyes moved to the hidden camera.

Then to Clara.

Then to Julian.

Her panic was no longer hidden.
