Chapter 1 - The Fork Falls

A pregnant woman survives her mother in law’s poisoned dinner and activates hidden footage that turns the entire family against her.

Claire Wycliffe lifted one forkful of truffle risotto toward her mouth.

The dining room glittered around her like a museum built to judge women.

Crystal chandelier light poured over the long polished table. White flowers rose between silver candlesticks. Twelve family trustees sat in expensive silence beneath ancestral portraits, watching the seven-months-pregnant woman at the center of the succession dinner like she had been invited only to be evaluated.

Then Claire froze.

Her fingers tightened around the fork.

The metal slipped.

It struck the porcelain plate with a sharp sound that made Adrian turn instantly.

Claire’s eyes stretched wide.

One hand flew to her throat.

The other pressed protectively over her stomach.

“Adrian… I can’t breathe.”

His chair slammed backward.

But before he reached her, Beatrice Wycliffe seized his sleeve with a jeweled hand and yanked him back.

“Sit down. She’s performing again.”

Adrian stared at his mother in disbelief.

Claire gasped, shoulders shaking, lips trembling as the room failed to move.

Beatrice leaned close to Claire’s face, pearls glowing against her dark navy dress, mouth twisting into a satisfied whisper.

“Die quietly. Adrian needs a wife who can give him a son.”

Claire’s eyes filled with terror.

Then Beatrice’s heel struck the chair frame, jolting Claire sideways.

Claire’s hand disappeared beneath the table.

Her fingers found the hidden epinephrine injector beneath her maternity dress.

She tore it free.

Adrian ripped away from Beatrice and swept a chair aside.

Claire pressed the injector firmly into her outer thigh through the fabric.

Adrian planted himself between the women, face twisted with fury.

“What did you put in her food?”

Claire, still fighting for breath, grabbed her smartphone and slammed one control.

The dining-room screen powered on.

Grainy footage appeared.

Beatrice approached Claire’s plate with a concealed jar and jeweled spoon.

The footage paused before anything poured.

Beatrice turned ghost white.

Claire rose with Adrian’s support, breathless but razor-sharp.
