Chapter 5 - The Plate Nobody Touches

The plate of risotto sat in the center of the table like a silent accusation.

Nobody reached for it.

Nobody cleared it.

Nobody dared.

A servant near the wall looked toward Beatrice, then toward Adrian, waiting for permission from the wrong person.

Adrian spoke without turning.

“Leave it.”

The servant froze, then stepped back.

Beatrice’s nostrils flared.

“You are humiliating this family.”

Claire’s face went still.

“I almost stopped breathing.”

“You always make yourself the center.”

Claire looked down at her stomach.

Then back at Beatrice.

“I am not the center tonight.”

The room understood what she meant.

The unborn child.

The future Beatrice had tried to control through meals, documents, whispers, seating arrangements, and cruel little comments about heirs.

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“My child was at this table too.”

Beatrice’s lips parted.

The sentence stripped away her last respectable disguise.

Whatever she thought of Claire, whatever doubts she had, whatever obsession she carried about sons and succession, she had endangered more than a daughter-in-law.

Or had intended to.

The baby’s condition remained unrevealed.

No medical conclusion arrived.

No outcome.

Only dread.

Claire’s fingers trembled around the smartphone.

The security screen still showed Beatrice near the plate.

Paused.

Waiting.

Beatrice glanced toward the antique clock.

Her eyes narrowed.

“When did you install that?”

Claire answered without blinking.

“After I learned not to accept food quietly.”

Several trustees recoiled.

Beatrice’s mouth shook with rage.

Adrian looked at Claire, hurt moving through fury.

“How many times did you feel unsafe?”

Claire did not answer.

Not because the answer was small.

Because it was too large for fifteen seconds, for one dinner, for one husband who had ignored too many signs.

She simply looked at the untouched plate.

Adrian followed her gaze.

His face collapsed into recognition.
