Chapter 9 - The Screen Pauses Before the Pour

Claire moved her thumb.
The security footage shifted forward by a fraction.
The grainy image showed Beatrice closer to the plate.
The concealed jar angled in her hand.
The jeweled spoon glinting near the risotto.
Then Claire paused it again.
Before anything poured.
Before the substance appeared.
Before the complete recording exposed every detail.
The room exhaled in horror.
Beatrice lunged again.
Adrian blocked her instantly.
Wineglasses slipped from two trustees’ hands and shattered against the floor.
Claire did not flinch.
She stood with the injector in one hand and the smartphone in the other, face pale but terrifyingly focused.
“Everyone should watch what she did to my plate.”
The sentence settled over the table.
Beatrice’s lips trembled.
“Claire…”
It sounded almost pleading.
Too late.
The trustees stared at the paused footage.
They did not know the substance.
They did not know the baby’s condition.
They did not know what would happen next.
But they knew enough to look at Beatrice differently.
That was the punishment she had feared most in this room.
Recognition.
Not arrest.
Not law.
Not scandal.
Recognition from people whose silence had empowered her for years.
Adrian kept his body between Claire and his mother.
He looked back at his wife.
“Lean on me.”
Claire hesitated.
Then she did.
Not surrendering.
Surviving.
Beatrice saw the movement and recoiled as if the alliance itself wounded her.
Outside the tall windows, cold Greenwich reflections pressed against the glass.
May you like
Inside, the chandelier still glowed warmly over a dinner nobody would finish.
