Chapter 8 - Adrian Asks the Wrong Question

Adrian wanted to ask why.

Why would his mother do this?

Why would Claire hide the camera?

Why did no one tell him?

Why did the family watch first and help second?

But as he looked at his wife gasping under chandelier light, he realized why was too generous.

Why gave Beatrice a chance to decorate cruelty with excuses.

Succession pressure.

Family expectations.

Fear.

Tradition.

A desire for a grandson.

Concern over Claire’s health.

No explanation would change the image on the screen.

His mother near Claire’s plate.

His wife choking.

His unborn child at risk.

His own hesitation in the first seconds because some trained part of him still listened when Beatrice called Claire dramatic.

That last piece broke him.

He turned toward Claire.

“I hesitated.”

She looked at him.

No denial.

No comfort.

Only truth.

“Yes.”

The single word hurt more than anger.

Beatrice seized on it.

“See? Even he knows you exaggerate.”

Adrian turned so sharply she stepped back.

“No.”

His face twisted with fury.

“I hesitated because you trained this family to doubt anyone you wanted weak.”

The trustees went utterly still.

Beatrice’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Adrian stepped closer to her.

Not touching.

Not attacking.

Just removing the distance she had used as dominance.

“What did you put in her food?”

He had asked it already.

Now the question returned heavier.

Beatrice looked at the screen.

Then the plate.

Then Claire.

No answer.

Claire’s fingers tightened around the phone.

The recording remained incomplete.

The substance stayed hidden.

The next consequence stayed outside the frame.

But Beatrice’s silence dragged the truth nearer.
