Chapter 10 - Before the Recording Plays

Police did not arrive.
No arrest was shown.
The complete recording remained unseen.
The substance inside the hidden container was not revealed.
The baby’s condition was not stated.
No final consequence appeared.
The story ended in the grand Wycliffe estate dining room in Greenwich, Connecticut, beneath warm chandelier light and cold window reflections, with crystal wineglasses shattered near the long polished table and a plate of risotto sitting untouched before Claire’s chair.
Claire stood with Adrian supporting her carefully, one hand holding the epinephrine injector, the other gripping her smartphone.
Her cream maternity dress moved faintly with her unsteady breathing.
Her face was tear-streaked, pale, and exhausted.
But her eyes were cold with determination.
Adrian stood between Claire and Beatrice, navy suit tense across his shoulders, face twisted with protective fury and dawning guilt.
Beatrice stood near the wall-mounted security screen, dark navy dress perfect, pearl necklace trembling against her throat, one hand reaching helplessly toward the paused footage.
On the screen, grainy monochrome video showed Beatrice approaching Claire’s plate with a concealed jar and jeweled spoon.
The image stopped before anything was revealed.
The trustees stared in horror.
No one defended Beatrice.
No one called Claire dramatic.
No one touched the plate.
Claire looked across the table at every relative who had watched her struggle to breathe before deciding what to believe.
Her voice came breathless but razor-sharp.
“Everyone should watch what she did to my plate.”
Beatrice turned ghost white.
Adrian blocked her from the screen.
The antique clock remained still near the fireplace, its hidden camera having seen more than Beatrice ever imagined.
Claire did not press play yet.
She did not need to.
May you like
The room had already changed.
And in the final silence before the recording continued, Beatrice understood that the family she ruled through fear had just seen enough to fear her back.
