Chapter 4 - The Trustees Stop Judging Claire

The trustees had arrived prepared to measure Claire.

They had watched how she sat.

How she touched her stomach.

How often she spoke.

Whether she smiled enough.

Whether she deferred to Beatrice.

Whether pregnancy had made her too emotional for the Wycliffe succession conversation.

Now every judgment turned backward.

One trustee stared at Beatrice’s jeweled serving spoon.

Another stared at Claire’s plate.

A third could not stop looking at the antique clock.

The old room had eyes.

That realization unsettled them all.

Claire straightened slowly with Adrian’s support.

Her breathing was still uneven, but steadier now. The injector remained visible in her hand, proof that she had been prepared for a danger no one else had taken seriously.

Beatrice saw the trustees shifting away from her and panicked.

“She carries that thing because she wants attention.”

Claire looked at her.

“No. I carry it because I wanted to live.”

The words did not need to be loud.

They traveled farther than shouting.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

A trustee near the end of the table spoke carefully.

“Beatrice, what were you doing in the recording?”

Beatrice turned on him.

“Do not interrogate me at my own table.”

The trustee looked at Claire, then at the screen.

“This is not just your table anymore.”

The sentence landed like a vote nobody had called.

Beatrice recoiled.

Adrian noticed the reaction and understood: his mother was not only afraid of being blamed. She was afraid of losing the room.

Claire leaned one palm on the table.

Her plate remained untouched except for the fallen fork.

The risotto sat beneath chandelier light, innocent in appearance, impossible now to see as food.

Adrian reached toward it.

Claire caught his wrist.

“Don’t touch it.”

He stopped immediately.

That obedience made Beatrice’s eyes widen.

Claire had not shouted.

Had not commanded.

But Adrian listened.

The trustees noticed that too.

The old power order was cracking.
