Chapter 1 - The Envelope at the Dinner Table

A woman refuses to keep funding her husband’s family, and his public assault turns their luxury dinner into evidence against them.
The financial envelope slid across the banquet table and struck Claire’s plate.
A crystal wineglass trembled beside it.
The ballroom went quiet beneath the chandeliers.
White floral centerpieces towered between gold chairs.
Candles flickered over polished silverware.
Relatives in expensive formalwear turned toward Claire with the hungry silence of people waiting for someone else to be humiliated.
Eleanor sat across from her in a cream designer suit, pearls shining at her throat, satisfaction glowing in her perfectly made-up face.
Nathan watched from beside his mother in a black tuxedo, his jaw tight, his expression hard.
Walter sat near the end of the table with his loosened tie and a face full of alarm he did nothing with.
Vanessa lounged nearby in a pale shimmering gown, her smile thin and smug.
Derek avoided Claire’s eyes.
Eleanor pointed directly at Claire.
“Starting next month, you’ll transfer another fifteen hundred.”
Claire lowered her fork slowly.
For years, that had been her role.
Transfer.
Cover.
Fix.
Pay.
Smile.
Apologize for not giving enough.
She looked at the envelope.
Then at Nathan.
Not Eleanor.
Nathan.
The man who had promised marriage but delivered invoices through his mother’s hands.
Claire rose from her chair in one decisive movement.
Her crystal corset gown caught the chandelier light, pink and purple tulle shifting around her as she placed both palms on the table.
Her eyes shone with tears, but her voice cut through the room.
“I’m not your family’s ATM anymore.”
Nathan shoved his chair back so violently the legs scraped the floor.
He stormed around the table and planted himself inches from her face.
“Apologize to my mother. Right now.”
Claire did not lower her eyes.
His hand moved.
The first strike snapped her head sideways.
Gasps rose, then died.
No one stopped him.
Claire touched her cheek and turned back slowly.
“Did you just hit me?”
Nathan struck her again.
Her handbag burst open across the floor.
Keys, wallet, lipstick.
Vanessa picked up the lipstick and looked down at her.
“Just apologize, and this will be over.”
Claire looked at them all.
