Chapter 4 - Nathan’s Raised Hand

Nathan had always raised his voice before raising anything else.

Claire remembered the pattern now with sick clarity.

First came the command.

Then the accusation.

Then the demand for apology.

Then Eleanor’s approval from somewhere nearby.

Then Claire folding, because peace felt like survival.

Tonight, he had skipped the softer steps.

In public.

In a ballroom.

In front of guests.

Because he believed the family had trained her well enough to absorb it.

He was wrong.

Claire kept the phone raised.

Nathan’s mouth tightened.

“You are making this worse.”

Claire stared at him through the screen.

“For you.”

His nostrils flared.

Eleanor snapped, “Nathan, stop talking.”

The words startled him.

His mother never told him to stop when he defended her.

Now she did.

Because the phone was still recording.

Claire turned slightly to include Eleanor more clearly.

The older woman’s cream suit glowed under chandelier light, but her face had gone rigid.

No more delight.

No more theatrical cruelty.

Only calculation.

Claire looked at the financial envelope.

“Whose idea was the envelope?”

Eleanor’s lips pressed together.

Nathan barked, “It doesn’t matter.”

“It mattered when you slid it at my plate.”

The guests in the background remained still.

Some looked horrified.

Some looked ashamed.

Some looked excited in the ugliest way people do when scandal arrives at a rich table.

Claire ignored them.

This was not for them.

This was for the record of what had happened before they all had time to rewrite it.

Walter finally spoke.

“Everyone calm down.”

Claire turned toward him.

Her phone captured his face.

“Calm down?” she asked.

Walter’s eyes filled with discomfort.

He looked at her bruise, then away.

Claire nodded once.

“There it is.”

Derek shifted in his chair.

Nathan’s fist clenched.

Claire noticed.

So did the camera.

She lifted the phone higher.

“You want to try again?”

The room went deadly quiet.

Nathan’s hand opened.

Closed.

Opened again.

Then slowly dropped to his side.
