Chapter 7 - Eleanor’s Delight Disappears

Eleanor had enjoyed the first demand.

Claire had seen it.

The way her mother-in-law slid the envelope across the table with flair.

The way she lifted her chin.

The way she waited for Claire to shrink.

She had enjoyed Nathan’s intimidation too.

That enjoyment now haunted her face.

Claire turned the phone toward Eleanor again.

“Tell them what you told me last month.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

“I told you nothing.”

Claire tilted her head.

“The family needs women who understand duty.”

Eleanor’s lips parted.

Nathan looked sharply at his mother.

Claire continued.

“A good wife doesn’t ask where the money goes.”

Vanessa stared at Eleanor.

Walter looked down.

Derek rubbed his forehead.

Eleanor’s face twisted.

“You twist everything.”

Claire’s eyes stayed calm.

“I learned from experts.”

The insult hit cleanly.

Eleanor stepped around the table, pearls shaking.

Nathan grabbed her arm.

“Mother.”

She stopped, furious that she had almost moved toward the camera like the villain Claire already knew she was.

Claire’s phone remained steady.

The bruise near her eye had darkened.

Her split lip shone under the chandelier light.

She did not hide either.

For years, this family had forced her to make pain presentable.

Tonight, she let presentation die.

A guest whispered, “Someone should call—”

Claire’s eyes flicked toward the sound.

“No one moves.”

The guest froze.

Nathan stared at her.

“You don’t command my house.”

Claire looked around the ballroom.

Gold chairs.

Floral centerpieces.

A family dinner funded by the woman they had just tried to financially corner.

She did not say the thought aloud.

Not tonight.

No blocked cards.

No hidden email.

No consequences.

Only suspense.

She looked back at Nathan.

“Then stop acting afraid.”

His face drained.

That was the cruelest thing she could say because it was true.

He was afraid.

Not of hurting her.

May you like

Of being seen hurting her.
