Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Lipstick
The lipstick lay on the table between them.
Bright.
Ridiculous.
A tiny object in a room full of larger crimes.
Vanessa had picked it up while Claire was still catching her breath against the chair.
Claire could not stop seeing that.
Not because the lipstick mattered.
Because it revealed hierarchy.
To Vanessa, Claire’s spilled handbag was a mess to sort, not a woman to help.
The lipstick had been easier to touch than Claire’s pain.
Vanessa saw Claire looking at it and flushed.
“I didn’t know what to do.”
Claire’s phone turned slightly toward her.
“You knew how to pick that up.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I was scared.”
Claire’s bruised smile returned faintly.
“Of him?”
Vanessa looked at Nathan.
Then Eleanor.
Then down.
Not enough.
Still, the glance was recorded.
Eleanor slammed one palm onto the table.
“Stop interrogating us.”
Crystal glasses shook.
Claire turned the camera toward her mother-in-law.
The older woman immediately straightened, trying to look composed.
Too late.
The slam had been captured.
The demand had been captured.
The fear had been captured.
Claire set the envelope down unopened beside her phone hand.
She would not reveal blocked cards.
She would not reveal emails.
She would not reveal financial consequences.
Not yet.
The ending was not for them to see tonight.
Only the beginning.
Nathan tried again.
“Claire, you’re hurt. Let me get you cleaned up.”
The words were almost believable.
Almost.
But his eyes kept darting toward the phone.
She stepped back.
“No.”
Walter finally rose fully.
“Son, enough.”
Nathan stared at his father.
The room shifted.
Not because Walter was brave now.
Because he was late.
Nathan’s face darkened.
“You sat there.”
Walter flinched.
Claire looked at both men.
“Yes,” she said. “He did.”
Walter’s shame became visible.
Derek pushed his chair back slightly.
Then stopped.
Too afraid to choose a side.
