Chapter 3 - The Five Witnesses

Five witnesses had watched Nathan hit her.

Five.

That number mattered to Claire.

Not because any of them had helped.

Because none of them could pretend they had not seen.

Nathan still stood close enough that his raised hand entered the corner of the phone frame.

Eleanor’s pearls trembled against her throat.

Vanessa held the lipstick like a stolen object that had suddenly become poisonous.

Walter’s hand remained suspended above his chair, too late to count as courage.

Derek looked down at the table, refusing even now to meet Claire’s eyes.

Claire adjusted the phone slightly.

Not dramatically.

Precisely.

She captured the banquet table.

The envelope beside her plate.

The scattered handbag.

The wineglasses still rattling.

The faces.

The silence.

Nathan stepped forward.

“Give me that.”

Claire stepped back.

Her heel caught the edge of her tulle skirt, but she steadied herself.

The phone stayed high.

“Nathan,” Eleanor hissed, her voice suddenly thin, “don’t.”

He froze.

Not because of Claire.

Because his mother sounded afraid.

That was the first fracture.

Nathan glanced at Eleanor.

“What?”

Eleanor’s eyes flicked toward the phone.

Only then did Nathan fully understand.

This was no longer a private family dinner.

This was evidence.

Claire saw the realization pass through him.

The entitlement drained first.

Then the anger tried to return.

Then panic rose beneath it.

He lowered his hand slowly.

Too late.

The camera had already seen it raised.

Vanessa set the lipstick down on the table as if distance could erase the moment.

Claire turned the phone slightly toward her.

“Vanessa, look at me.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

She did not want to.

Claire waited.

Vanessa finally lifted her eyes.

Her smugness was gone.

Claire’s voice was soft.

“You picked up my lipstick while I was on the floor.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“It fell.”

“And you thought that mattered more than me.”

Vanessa looked away again.

Claire did not chase the answer.

She had enough.

Eleanor stood, chair scraping sharply.

“This family will not be blackmailed.”

Claire looked into her phone screen.

Her bruised face stared back at her.

She smiled again.

Not happily.

Not beautifully.

Like someone who had finally stopped begging the wrong people to be decent.
